..The Roar Of ‘Just Jane’…

We now live about a mile from the home of ‘Just Jane’ the Lancaster bomber - www.lincsaviation.co.uk - and over the Easter weekend they had her taxiing the runaway, this is a special treat and you can actually ride in her. It’s the first time since moving here, that we’ve heard the roar as they started her up and she moved around. The noise was incredible, it sounded a bit like thunder, and we could hear it from indoors, with the double glazed windows shut!! Standing outside it sounded as if it was in the garden - it made me appreciate the noise that the crews put up with mission after mission.

Our good friend, Bert was a navigator on the Lancaster’s and talks, infrequently, about the cramped conditions, the noise and how cold it was. I know that he has fond memories of his comrades but doesn’t often talk about his experiences and even now after all these decades it brings tears to his eyes to mention it.
