Dave & I went to Horncastle yesterday – I really like it there – it’s what a small market town should be. There’s a nice mix of shops, mostly small independents, a couple of charity shops (I like them because I never know what I’ll find!), antique shops (not our thing) and even a Tesco & Somersfield -- Not sure that’s such a good thing --

We went to Myers bakery – their Lincolnshire Plum Loaf is absolutely gorgeous – baked to a secret recipe, of course but there’s definitely something distinctive about it. I bought two (one for the freezer – if it gets that far). The Myers brothers were in the local paper recently as they’ve just secured a deal to supply British Airways with the Plum Loaf – so even though Dave & I have never flown we can sit on the sofa and close our eyes and imagine that we’re munching amongst the clouds…...

I was just thinking, I do sometimes you know! If I believed in reincarnation (which I don’t – I believe that once you’re dead – that’s it – over – you’re either worm food and scattered ash) What would I come back as?
It’s a difficult one, I can tell you. My first thought was something cute and sweet – puppy dog or kitty cat – but no that much too ‘nice & normal’ & I feel I’m that already…..hey! don’t laugh…..
What about something snappy? You know like a crocodile or snake – no, too many people come back as that already… :0)

I think I’ll be something paranormal – I like the idea of being there but not really being there ~ a presence in the room ~ a guiding hand so to speak.
....I’d be friendly of course, unless you upset me then I'll start throwing things around....

I Like This :0)

'Twas a new feeling - something more

Than we had dar'd to own before,

Which then we hid not;

We saw it in each other's eye,

And wish'd in every broken sigh

To speak, but did not!

She felt my lips' impassion'd touch;

'Twas the first time I dar'd so much,

And yet, she chid not; But whisper'd o'er my burning brow,

'Oh! do you doubt I love you now?'

Sweet soul! I did not!

Warmly I felt her bosom thrill,

I prest it closer, closer still, Though gently bid not;

Till - oh! the world hath seldom heard

Of lovers, who so nearly err'd,

And yet who - did not!

Steve (eldest son) phoned from OZ this morning for a lovely long chat (he was on the phone for over an hour). He left on 26 November 2006 on a years work visa and has fallen in love with Sydney & an American called Jackie. He has now secured four years sponsorship with Deutsche bank so he’s very happy.

It goes without saying that Dave & I want him to be happy too, of course we do, after all that’s how we bought the boys up to be independent & think for themselves – but why does he have to be so independent on the other side of the world??

OMG I miss him like you wouldn’t believe!
It’s been 73 weeks since I’ve seen him. He phones every couple of weeks and constantly texts and emails but it’s not the same as seeing his face and holding him in my arms

We’ve got the plasterer in this morning – we’re working our way through all the trades, as you can see – he’s working from stilts (see photo) & it’s really fascinating to watch him.

I can’t use them myself, I remember trying them when I was a kid and falling off numerous times like you do and giving it up as a bad job – pogo stick had the same effect :0)

Tom (youngest son) can really ride (is that the right expression?) a pogo stick – we bought him one for his 21st and he ‘tiggered’ it all round the house….I expect that he’s still got it somewhere in the flat…Tom’s a bit if a hoarder – the flat that he and Danielle are buying is just full of allsorts of ‘rubbish’, but no doubt it’s treasure to him. I don’t know where he gets it from -- must be Dave --

After the excitement of the Tree Man yesterday – I’ve decided to be much more refined today.

So I’m sitting here watching the bird life fighting over the new feeding station that Dave’s constructed on the felled conifer. There’s been great tits, robins, blackbirds, wood pigeons and a couple of doves so far – I can also see way across the side field since, you know who, removed the tree and there’s been several strutting pheasants going back and forth, some of them seem very fat!!

We’ve still got the workmen in the road – it seems that it’s not only the drain outside us that needs attention, most of the others do as well. Dave was speaking to one of them yesterday (whilst I was otherwise engaged!!) and he was told that they’re now going to strengthen them all and resurface part of the road at the same time – he reckoned that they’d be here for about three weeks…..

The Tree Man is here again today clearing a large patch of side garden that’s all overgrown and has been used by the previous owners as a dumping ground. He’s found allsorts including large pieces of concrete, metal pipes, broken water-butt, roofing tiles, wall tiles, hosepipe, corrugated roofing and remains of several trees and lots and lots of burnt ash.

He’s doing a grand job & hasn’t stopped all morning, except for the numerous cups of coffee that I’ve been providing, of course. While he’s here he’s also going to cut back an apple tree behind a very dilapidated shed (that’s so pretty, Dave’s going to refurbish it – I know hasn’t he got enough to do?) and cutting back ivy that is taking over two lilac trees - boy! I could just sit and watch him working all day & to be fair that’s mostly what I’ve been doing today……

Pity it’s been raining on and off all the time – if it was the middle of the summer – he might have been bare-chested…. ;0)

We went into Boston today and completed the trip that was suppose to happen yesterday -- AND -- the car behaved itself and we got there and back without incident….WHEW!!

But, when we arrived home there was a digger blocking our drive & four workmen were all standing around, hard hats on, all looking down a hole outside our bungalow – EEK! There seemed to be a lot of head scratching going on.

Dave got out of the car to find out what was going on, to be told that the drain had collapsed in the road (thank goodness it’s not on our property!!) & they were doing emergency repairs.

They moved the digger out of the way so that we could get on the drive and we left them, hands in pockets discussing the situation (see picture!) - ten minutes later, there was no sign of them or the digger – they’d gone home then

Is it Friday the thirteenth today??? I’m beginning to think it must be – it’s been one of those – it can’t be happening to me days – Firstly, Dave & I had dentist check-up’s this morning (first one since we moved here) and what a surprise I had to have x-rays (toothache under bridgework) while Dave sailed through his, as is normal. I’ve know him for 31 years and he’s had two fillings in all that time – while I have to have some form of inspection, cavity fillings, caps or bridgework almost everytime I set foot inside a dental practice. I’ve got another appointment for 8 May – That’s something to look forward to, then….

Then when we got back into the car to continue shopping etc – the damn car started, stalled and then just WOULDN’T start again!! Luckily we have break-down cover so after waiting half an hour. A man arrives, puts jump leads on battery and off we go -- ten minutes down road the car (Toyota Corolla) does exactly the same thing -- this time we were outside a garage so he got us sorted with a new battery (another £60 we didn’t expect to spend today) & off we go again ~ everything is finally OK (we hope!).

Only this time we think, forget shopping and lets just go straight home - you’d think that would be simplicity itself, wouldn’t you? But NO, not today……we get to the top of our road and the whole road is closed off for emergency repairs ~ WHAT??

We’ve had to leave the car at the top of the road and walk the rest of the way home - the roadmen are going to let us know when we can return the car…

It is the 13th -- Isn’t It???

I’ve been to my local post office this lunchtime (eBay things) and as I got out of the car in the car park, there were five secondary school students standing & larking around….three of them smoking.

I was immediately put on my guard with an uneasy feeling as I approached them, but two of the girls and a boy all nodded to me and said, “ Hello” – I was completely taken by surprise – that’s not the sort of thing that happens these days…is it…??
It didn’t happen very often where we were living before, I can tell you - the kids in the local school were mostly very intimidating.

But it did, it happened to me – I smiled hello back and went into the post office with a nice warm feeling. The two girls followed me into the shop and I heard them thanking the shop keeper as they left

...What Are You Having For Dinner...?

www.bootblack.co.uk

outside temp: 9c - Dull & Raining

Another rainy day in paradise (weather wise that is!).

I’ve just got back from our local farm shop buying vegetables for dinner today - we’re having beef stroganoff - I know it’s not a traditional Sunday roast, but we rarely seem to have that these days (does anyone else bother?).
I don’t know why really, it just seems a lot of effort for the two of us, but I don’t suppose it makes much of a difference , does it??

It’s still such a treat to go and get local produce from a local shop – there really wasn’t much like it where we use to live. We did have a farmers market but it was a good 15 minutes in the car from us (sort of feels wrong – doesn’t it?) and everything seemed so expensive. Today I bought mushrooms, onions, two large cauliflowers & a cloth recycle vegetable bag for £3.70 - cheap at the price, I think

Have a Good Sunday

I was lucky enough to have a fair amount of money given to me for my birthday and decided to treat myself with a Bose iPod SoundDock and I’m so pleased that I did - I’ve called it Bing (you know after the crooner!) - I always give everything a name…….

The quality and volume of sound that comes from it is incredible - it really does do exactly what it says on the tin :0)

I’m one of those people that can’t sit in a silent room, I have to have music playing - well most of the time blaring out (thank goodness we’re detached!)….. Dave’s always telling me to turn it down.

My musical tastes are pretty varied I like almost everything except real jazz and classical - I just can’t see the point of jazz, all those instruments playing different tunes at the same time!! I really dislike classical music, of all kinds. My granddad always called classical music - pisspot music - which pretty much sums it up for me as well.

Must go - Bing’s playing my tune…

I’ve been responsible for my dad’s finances since 2000 because he has Alzheimers – the Pension people know this – so why has it been so difficult for them to action a change of address.

Since the beginning of March I’ve been trying to get them to change my address – I’ve written to them twice, filled in two enormous forms (because they can’t trace him – he’s had this pension since 1959!!) & sent several emails. I received more correspondence from them yesterday that had been redirected from our old address.

So I decided to bite the bullet & phoned them this morning and after sitting in a queue for an age – finally someone was ‘available’ to answer my query. I gave him all the relevant information only to be told that he’d transfer me through to the office supervisor….OMG! WHY…??

After repeating myself again, she finally found dad’s details said that she’d ensure the change of address would be done today, apologised for the ‘cock up’ (my words not hers) but didn’t have the foggiest idea why it’s taken them so much hassle to get it right

I’m pleased to report that they are & I’d recommend them to anyone - www.empiredirect.co.uk - they have done exactly what they said they would do.

They phoned me the next morning to confirm my payment and arrange for a delivery day, then a couple of days before the agreed date the courier company phoned to confirm the date and allocated time for the delivery and then on the morning the van drivers phoned me to say that he’d be with me within the hour AND they were. We’ve got The Tree Man here today (very pleasant on the eye) - he’s doing an excellent job at trimming my conifers (so to speak!!). He’s already taken done one of our very large unruly conifers and the extra light that it’s let into the lounge is quite remarkable. We’re keeping the smaller one for the birds and we don’t want to lose all the greenery.

We also have a row of four conifers at the front of the bungalow on the edge of the road and he’s reduced their height and cut them back as well - so it’s looking very neat and smart.

As he’s going such a great job I’ve been going around the garden looking for other jobs that he’ll be able to do -- any excuse to get him back --

Dave & I saw There Will Be Blood last night at the Kinema - it was quite a good story but much too slow for my liking….lasted two and half hours.…could have been told in hour and half.

On the way home we stopped at the top of the road to have our first drink in our local - there was a 21st party going on so it was a bit noisy for us - but, what was nice was that we already knew two people in there and the ‘Birthday Boy’ (who we didn’t know) came straight over to us and welcomed us and started chatting (even though he was a little drunk!) – so we felt very welcomed which was a great feeling when you think that we are the ‘outsiders’.

We also had a run-around this morning through the villages to see what's here & there's some really pretty villages here in the Wolds.

So far, Dave & I have no regrets about moving here from Kent - the people have been so friendly but not over-powering (if you know what I mean), the variety of local shops is very refreshing (such a change from where we were living - there was Tesco, Tesco and more Tesco) & the open countryside really does it for me.

It’s a lovely bright day (so far) here in Lincolnshire & I’m in a ‘feel good’ mood today. I’ve been working at the computer and stopping…frequently…to daydream out of the window & watch the wildlife - there’s so much more of it here than where we were living before in Kent.

I’ve also been looking at the farm vehicles that are constantly going passed the window, there’s a fair amount of farming going on around us – chickens, pigs and arable - I had no idea how big the trucks, tractors etc would be before we moved here. I suppose I had a romantic vision of them from childhood.
