THOUGHT FOR TODAY
...when in doubt, tell the truth...

John was on his deathbed and gasped pitifully.

'Give me one last request, dear,' he said.

'Of course, John,' his wife said softly.

'Six months after I die,' he said, 'I want you to marry Bob.'

'But I thought you hated Bob,' she said.

With his last breath John said, 'I do!'

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
…never eat more than you can lift…

I made a rice pudding yesterday – that’s nice, you’re saying – but I’m afraid to admit it wasn’t.

I’ve always had trouble making them, I don’t know why, I follow the instructions to the letter. I carefully weigh all three ingredients and do exactly what it says in the recipe but they never emerge from the oven all cooked to perfection. Yesterdays effort arrived at the table crispy and you could cut it with a knife….

My mum always said. ‘If it’s brown it’s cooked, if it’s black it’s buggered’

….Mine wasn’t brown….

...For Mature Couples...

www.bootblack.co.uk

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
…when you meet someone who can cook and do housework--don't hesitate a minute--marry him.…

CHUCKLES FOR MATURE COUPLES AND OTHERS

My husband and I divorced over religious differences. He thought he was God, and I didn't.

Marriage is a three-ring circus:Engagement ring, wedding ring, and suffering.

For Sale :Wedding dress, size 8. Worn once by mistake.

There are two times when a man doesn't understand a woman:Before marriage and after marriage.

Why were hurricanes usually named after women? Because when they arrive, they're wet and wild, butwhen they go, they take your house and car

The woman applying for a job in a Florida lemon groveseemed way too qualified for the job. 'Look Miss,' said the foreman, 'have you any actualexperience in picking lemons?''Well, as a matter if fact, yes!' she replied.? 'I've been divorced three times.'

An old man goes to the Wizard to ask him if he can remove a curse he has been living with for the last 40 years. The Wizard says, 'Maybe, but you will have to tell methe exact words that were used to put the curse on you.'The old man says without hesitation, 'I now pronounce you man and wife.'

I was in the express lane at the store quietly fuming.Completely ignoring the sign, the woman ahead of me had slipped into the check-out line pushing a cart piled high with groceries. Imagine my delight when the cashier beckoned the woman to come forward looked into the cart and asked sweetly, 'So which six items would you like to buy?' Wouldn't it be great if that happened more often?

Because they had no reservations at a busy restaurant, my elderly neighbor and his wife were told there would be a 45-minute wait for a table. 'Young man, we're both 90 years old,' the husband said . 'We may not have 45 minutes.' They were seated immediately

All eyes were on the radiant bride as her father escorted her down the aisle. They reached the altar and the waiting groom; the bride kissed her father and placed something in his hand. The guests in the front pews responded with ripples of laughter. Even the priest smiled broadly. As her father gave her away in marriage, the bride gave him back his credit card.

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

Three friends from the local congregation were asked, 'When you're in your casket, and friends and congregation members are mourning over you, what would you like them to say?' Artie said: 'I would like them to say I was a wonderful husband, a fine spiritual leader, and a great family man.' Eugene commented: 'I would like them to say I was a wonderful teacher and servant of God who made a huge difference in people's lives.' Al said: 'I'd like them to say, 'Look, he's moving!'

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
…the trouble with children is that they're not returnable…

I read this yesterday and thought I'd share it with you

I noticed yesterday in class that a rather emotionally fragile 11 year old was looking particularly sad. When I gently questioned her she said that she had found two lumps on Smudge, her beloved cat. Mummy was going to make an appointment with the vet but was too upset to look at the lumps.

I consoled the child as best I could and explained that sometimes we just have to learn to deal with these things as we grow up.

Next day I sought out the child and asked after Smudge. "OK,", was the reply, but no smile.

I was rather confused at her lack of cheeriness but then she told me that she thought the vet had got it wrong because he had called the lumps 'fine'.

When her Daddy came home from work she had told him the good news but then apparently he got rather cross and shouted "Twenty quid to be told my cat has got bollocks".

I really struggled to keep my face straight but she helped a lot by asking, "Please miss, what's bollocks" - what indeed!!

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
…you're only young once, but you can be immature forever…

It’s true that we’re all only young once and some people are lucky enough never to look as old as they really are – I have an uncle who is 84 but still looks as if he’s in his late sixties - and Dave (52) looks younger or at least that’s what people tell him (not me, obviously!). They always seem genuinely surprised when he says that our eldest is 25….funny how they don’t say the same to me though…. :0)

But now that I’ve passed the big 5-0, do I think that I’d like to be young again and have to go through it all again? – the teenage years, the first faltering pangs of love and OMG puberty - no forget it - I'll just carry on growing old gracefully.

And what about the immature bit - Do I consider myself immature? Absolutely not

....well maybe I am on certain days but only the ones that have a Y in them.... :0)

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
… babies are such a nice way to start people …

Dave & I have been married for a very long time and have been together even longer – 30 years, if you’d like to applaud :0) In all that time we’ve hardly had a cross word……that’s not completely true, but there’s not been that many of them to be honest.

We’ve never thrown things at each other or hit each other -- well, once he bit me and I slapped him around the face – hard, very hard -- and he fell off the toilet – but that’s a different story for another day and probably a different sort of blog and I’m digressing :0)

There’s only been once in all that time that I’ve even considered leaving him and that was when Tom (youngest) was around 3 years old and I desperately wanted another child – not just a child but a girl, I longed for a girl – and Dave said. ‘No because we can’t afford it, we didn’t have the space, the family was big enough’. And the killer – ‘He didn’t want more kids’ –

The problem with this situation is that there’s no compromise – no middle ground – he either wins or I do and he won and on reflection it was the right decision, of course. We’ve got two great healthy boys (who are now men) who we'll love to death and I know love us.

But there’s still the odd day when I wonder
...What If…?

before refurbishment -- obviously

I now have photos of Project 5 on face book -- if you'd like to see our progress, check it out -- www.facebook.com/photos.php?id=1225934715

THOUGHT FOR TODAY
…if it doesn’t fit, force it - if it breaks, it needed replacing anyway…

I must admit that I look at things that way, you know, if it works great if it doesn’t then let’s get another…

Dave however is exactly the opposite – he hates throwing things away and will spend an age repairing/refurbishing it – that’s one of the reasons why we ‘do up’ property, that and the fact that I LOVE moving – I know am I insane?….well, maybe…

It’s like the ‘shed issue’ (the one in the garden). It was a complete wreck – leaking roof where the felt was completely missing, rotten timbers in the floor, sides and door & a previous owner had painted the thing in white and pink emulsion -- idiot --

I was all for taking it down and buying a new one to replace it, but not Dave. ‘I can repair that’ said he and of course he can and has and it does looks fabby – it really does – it’s a new shed….well almost….

It now stands in the garden taking pride of place, gleaming white and black with a nearly planted wooden window box on the side and a pretty hanging basket on the front.

…I'll be getting the blinds and a carpet for it next week…

My runny nose & sore throat has now developed into a hacking cough which has kept me up for most of the night and this morning despite a long lay-in I still feel a wreck – don’t say ‘So what’s new?’

While wallowing in bed, I was watching Dave erecting a new washing line outside – we’ve bought one that retracts back against the wall (in case you’re interested!).

I called through the open window to him and said that. ‘I’d feel so much better if I could watch you doing it with your bare arse showing’. I’m sorry to report that he refused,

…THOUGHT FOR TODAY…
don't celebrate a holiday before it arrives

YIPPEE! We’re going on holiday to North Yorkshire in 5 weeks & 3 days….
Do you think I’m counting the days already??

We’ve just arranged to go to my favourite place -- North Yorkshire Moors -- we try to go back there at least once a year & we’re going there on 29 June…..

Our very first visit there was during June 1984 – Steve was 18m and I was five months pregnant with Tom – I just feel in love with the place straight away and we’ve gone back pretty much every year since. We stay in the same cottage just outside Rosedale Abbey, it belongs to Dave’s old boss – so we get a good deal on it :0)

I love the ruggedness and the solitude of the moors – and every single time we go back, I get this sinking butterfly feeling in the pit of my stomach as we get nearer and nearer….utter bliss….

…THOUGHT FOR TODAY…
it takes a long time to grow an old friend

I have a sore throat and running nose today that started during the night – why has this happened when it’s not even winter?…even though, to be fair the weather here has been mighty chilly especially at night – the last couple have been down to 3c, so maybe that’s the reason.

I’ve been dosing myself with Lemsip and gargling with aspirin (not at the same time I might add) and it’s helped – sort of…..

Dave’s been trying to encourage me to get into the garden under the falsehood that being outside will help with the stuffiness but I know that it’s just a ploy to get me out there so that I can do some weeding --

…I’ve told him I’ll put up with a dripping nose…

…THOUGHT FOR TODAY…
Why does ‘fat chance’ and ‘slim chance’ mean the same thing?

Dave had two appointment this morning at the surgery – one for a routine cholesterol blood test (results next week) and another with the stunning nurse practitioner - a ‘funny’ patch has arrived on his back in the same area as the prolapsed disk….

It just suddenly arrived unannounced about three weeks ago. It sort of looks as if he’s been pressing too hard on his skin and it’s left the indentation of his finger prints behind – but it isn’t raised and doesn’t hurt at all – very odd –

Anyway the stunning nurse practitioner had a good look at it and poked it around a bit and stated that she didn’t know exactly what it was…. but did say that she didn’t believe that it had anything to do with his back problem (so that’s comforting).

While we were there she also took his blood pressure which was a little up today (140/90)

…probably the excitement of seeing her… :0)

I’ve realised for some time that if I disappeared tomorrow that Beattie (our cat) wouldn’t miss me for a second - she ignores me to the extreme now - but that’s OK, I can live with that :0)

She’s Dave’s cat through and through and follows him around all the time – sitting outside the bathroom waiting for him to appear, tripping him up as soon as he moves, jumping onto his lap if he sits down & this morning she’s sitting on the window sill watching him painting the refurbished shed. As he walks across the garden she goes from room to room to keep an eye on him ..now that’s what I call love…

Mind you Dave does repay her loyalty by spending an age at every cat food section in every supermarket we ever go to, trying to entice her with another ‘smelly’ delight – to which she turns her nose up at most –

Dave & I have been to the Woodhall Spa Country Show today and it proved to be a fabulous day out. We nearly didn’t go because the weather looked so ‘iffy’ this morning, but I’m so pleased that we did. The rain held off but it was quite cold and very windy.

It was just what I imagined a ‘proper’ country fayre would be like – farm animals, farming related side stalls, children’s fairground rides and food stalls selling meaty things (not really a place for veggies!), as well as handmade items like walking sticks and plant boxes & demonstrations such as restringing a chair and thatching.

On arriving we went into the hen & cockerel marquee – I never knew there were so many different breeds – there were some really magnificent cocks and such pretty hens – boy, they were noisy! There was a lot of people looking at them but they didn’t seem in the least bit bothered. I rather liked the look of a pair of black bearded polish hens – they were just too cute, but Dave said I couldn’t have them -- spoil sport --

The Lincolnshire red cows put on a good show in the arena but you definitely felt that you wouldn’t want to mess with the bulls when they turned up. There was also curly haired pigs (arrh) and mop-like sheep as well as young shire horses dressed up in all their regalia and parading around……I really enjoyed it……can you tell?

We ended the afternoon with slices of hot Lincolnshire red beef stuffed in an enormous bun and a cup of tea from the WI stand – even though I must admit that it seemed a bit strange to be admiring them in one field and then eating them in another :0)

A four year old child lived next door to an elderly gentleman who had recently lost his wife.

When his Mother asked what he had said to the neighbour.

Dave & I went to the local tip this morning – not very exciting, is it? – but I must say that it’s a fantastic drive there through open countryside. It’s just under ten miles from us and other than the first couple of miles on the A153, the rest is a pure delight.

We saw a couple of hares on the side of the road darting about – you have to keep a close eye on them as they’re not very bright as far as the Green Cross Code goes and often run in front of the car….same as the pheasants, they really were at the back of the queue when they were giving out brains, weren’t they?? – saw four of those this morning.

The hedgerows are really coming into their own as well and there was an array of whites, creams, pinks, lilacs and purples. The trees were also looking magnificent, swaying gently in the breeze. The twisting lanes and fields looked very spring like and the vibrant yellow fields in the distance definitely gave it a great view.

We never passed another vehicle on the way – what bliss – and only an elderly gentleman walking his Jack Russell on the way back

Tom (youngest son) has emailed me with a story about his journey to work yesterday that I thought I’d share with you.

He works in London & cycles to work everyday and on his way there yesterday morning, he saw a policeman (in uniform) driving in traffic and TEXTING at the same time so Tom being Tom got out his phone and started filming him.

The policeman immediately stopped his car and approached Tom asking.
‘What are you doing?’ to which Tom said. ‘I’m recording you using a mobile phone while driving’ The reply from the policeman was. ‘It’s none of your business’.

Tom then stated. ‘Isn’t it illegal for anyone to text while driving?’ Tom said, that the policeman just smiled and said ‘Well done’ to which Tom smiled back and said. ‘Thank you’ and then took a photo of him before cycling away.

LONDON STREETS
By Christopher Matthew

Whenever I walk down a London Street
I take great care where I put my feet
And I watch for the gobs
And the doggies' big jobs
That lie there in piles, some sloppy, some neat,
Waiting for people to squidge with their feet
And I tiptoe around
With my eyes on the ground
And wonder what horror I'm next going to meet.

And the harder I look, I give you my word
The more I seem drawn to the tiniest turd
And the dogs see me coming and say, 'Here's a sap,
Let's nip round the corner and have a good crap.
He's wearing those shoes that have crinkly soles,
With lots of small ridges and dozens of holes,
And if we distract him by having a piddle,
Nine times out of ten he'll tread slap in the middle.
'There's nothing more pleases a dog's simple wit
Than to hear the familiar cry of 'Oh shit!'

It’s much cooler here today but as least it hasn’t rained……yet. Since we moved here at the beginning of March it’s rained on/off pretty much every day except for the last week when we’ve had glorious non-stop sunshine, be it a bit breezy, but this morning there’s a definite dampness in the air…again.

The birds have been very active this morning on the feeding station...it must be the filtered water and granary bread...but I’ve noticed that the starlings have arrived!! Up to the weekend, there’s been no sign of them feeding here, lots of robins, great tits, house sparrows, blackbirds and jackdaws (I like them) fighting for pole position but yesterday six starlings ascended and have already taken over – they really don’t like to share do they?

I’m hoping that they don’t put off the smaller birds as I’ve enjoyed their antics since we’ve been here. I never taken much noticed them before, I must admit but being here seems to have changed that.

We’ve discovered that we live opposite a ‘Clampett’ family…again… We use to live opposite them is a previous house and they wound us up no end with their shouting and screaming and leaving things in the way all the time – and now it looks as if we’ve met up with another ‘branch of the family’.

There’s a dad (always washing his car while shouting at the kids at the top of his voice!) but haven’t yet seen a mum. There’s a teenage girl who constantly walks up and down the road dragging a wheelie bin with her and also shouting all the time for no good reason that we can see, another girl around 10 who climbs all the trees in the area while yelling at the top of her voice and a boy who’s 7ish who seems to follow the two girls around wherever they go….not to mention their barking dog…

As it was so hot here yesterday afternoon (25c) we had all the windows open, isn’t unreasonable – is it? But after a couple of hours the barking & screaming from the kids and the father made us shut them…..

Yesterday I did my first bit ever of hoeing in the garden – my friend, Gerry will be pleased as she loves the garden and spends as much time as possible in it & she can’t understand why I have no interest in it at all – I like to look out on a well manicured lawn with sharp edges but it certainly doesn’t entice me to get out there and do anything about it.

For nearly thirty years Dave has sorted the garden single-handed, only stopping to ask me where this or that shrub or plant needs to be positioned. It’s worked like that for all our married life but now because of his back problem I know that if we want a nice garden then I have to do my bit – I know that I’ve got away with it very lightly for all these years…..

I was stung several times by the nettles, spiked by the holly, dropped the ‘cutter things’ over the neighbours fence & when I twisted my ankle decided to call it a day

It seems awfully quiet here this morning now that our visitors have gone back. It was so great to see them for a few days and now that they’ve gone it’s made me realise that Dave & I really are here alone and that friends and family are a five hour car journey away and no longer on the doorstep. I already knew this of course, but the weekend has brought it to the forefront.

After they’d pulled off the drive and all the waving was over I came back into the bungalow with a sort of empty, lost feeling and spent the rest of the day unsettled.

…I didn’t expect to feel like that…

It was Pat’s (Eric’s fiancĂ©e) birthday yesterday and we went to Village Limits in Woodhall Spa for a lovely Sunday lunch – I had the last piece of the ‘to die for’ White Chocolate & Raspberry cheesecake (lucky me!). After that we went for a drive around Woodhall – we showed them the Kinema and the Tea Room in the woods they’ve both so quaint - I felt quite the local showing my visitors around the area :0)

On the way back we stopped off at Coningsby airfield to see if the Typhoon was flying today (there’s a viewing area there) – unfortunately for Pat (she’s nutty about planes and pilots in particular) they weren’t – I told here she’d have to come back during the week next time as they rarely fly over the weekends unless something special is about to happen.

We ended the day with a birthday tea party and more booze – of course

It’s a pity they are going back to Kent today – I’ve really enjoyed them being here

Yesterday’s visit to the Spalding Flower Festival was a bit of a disappointment for us all to be fair – I expected a lot more flower floats but there was only a small selection of them with masses of flowers – there were a lot with no flowers at all (sort of defeats the object, don’t you think?), most had minimal bunting etc. There were two very good floats though, one with a polar bear and an elephant and the final float had two horse and a carriage caring the Spalding princesses.

But the weather stayed dry and the company was great – so it wasn’t a complete waste of a day

We’ve got our first ‘proper’ visitors this weekend – Doris (Dave’s mum), Eric (my uncle) & Pat (his partner in crime!). They arrived yesterday tea-time, unfortunately Doris wasn’t feeling well and certainly looked a bit ‘grey’ when she got here and didn’t really improve through the evening :0( but she did manage to stay the course throughout the evening.

The rest of us finished a couple of bottle of wine – isn’t that what it’s there for?? And all retired around midnight, happy and a bit giggly (doesn’t take as much these days!).

Dave’s now cooking a full English before we all go to Spalding for the Flower Festival for the day –

…Oh Yes! Doris is much better this morning – Thanks for asking…

You know how some people have exactly the right name for their job well I had an appointment with my new doctor this morning (I won’t go into detail of why!) – he’s name is Dr Busch (yep pronounced Bush!) – I could hardly keep a straight face when I saw him -- I wonder if he specialises in ‘woman complaints’:0)

I came out of the surgery with a prescription for pills & thinking I’d got away with it very lightly

...next time I need a doctor I think I’ll make an appointment with one of the others...

I’ve been told recently, that my blog is getting a bit of a ‘student’ following (...well Dave's section is...). It would seem that they are actually bothering to log on and find my blog -- WOW! That’s so exciting for me (I’m easily pleased, obviously!) -- it’s nice to know that it’s worth sitting here day after day banging away (so to speak) on the old keyboard & that there are real people out there reading it & getting a laugh from some of the daily ramblings.

I just wanted to say thanks to you all and I’ll try to keep you amused with my tales of life with the Humps….

…Well, Dave’s antics anyway – those sort of things never happen to me, of course…
